They found the next clue in the mosaic itself. Nothing she could take with her. But some of the tiles had been replaced, a subtle change creating a subtle message. She wasn’t sure how her father had even managed it. But the change, when looked at from the right angle and with a little bit of magic to see through the illusion spell, pointed the way to their next location.

“The armory?” Christopher asked as they traveled up in the elevator to the apartment building’s top floor. Pretending they were here to see someone to get past the doorman might have been trickier if Christopher hadn’t convinced him that his father—the dragon king—was interested in buying one of the apartments in the building, but the whole purchase and viewing process had to be kept secret.

The doorman had no problem believing Christopher was a dragon shifter. Believing he was one of the king’s sons only took a few extra minutes of convincing. Since there were no photos of the royal princes anywhere, people didn’t really know what Christopher or any of his brothers looked like. But it wasn’t much of a stretch to see him as the son of the dragon king. People did know what the king looked like.

The armory was closed by the time they reached it, of course, but her father hadn’t intended them to go inside. The armory was only about twenty blocks south of the hippo apartment building, so they reached it quickly. Christopher landed on the roof of the massive, block-sized, red brick structure, near the central tower of the administration building.

Myra smiled as she looked over the edge of the crenellated roof to the gray granite coat of arms in the center of the top level of the tower.

“You’re sure your father would have hidden something there?” Christopher leaned over the parapet too, scowling.

“He would. He knew how much I liked scaling buildings.”

She set a temporary spell on the armory security camera on the roof, to keep it from recording all this, then handed Christopher her pretty white coat which had been great for blending in with humans but would get in the way here.

“I could hover in front of that coat of arms for you to find the clue,” Christopher pointed out.

“Where would be the fun in that?”

She pulled a grappling hook from her multi-pocket vest and secured it between the brick parapets, the gap between crenellations narrow enough to make a secure hold for the hook. She secured the wire to her vest, winked at Christopher, and rolled over the side of the building, letting the wire catch her after a ten second free fall.

Christopher watched her every move as she scaled down the wall, her booted feet on the bricks, her gloved hands holding the repelling wire. She walked down until she was level with the coat of arms plaque, then hunted around the smooth gray granite until she found her father’s next clue.

When she got back up to the roof, Christopher helped her over the edge.
